Ross Photo Club were treated to a great presentation on Wildlife Photography from Elisa Best, entitled ‘Sue and Elisa’s Great Kruger Adventure’. Both Elisa and Sue Carter are very accomplished amateur photographers with a keen interest in wildlife photography and spent eight days in the Kruger National Park in South Africa a few years’ ago. This was a self-organised trip which maximised their stay in the Park itself and Elisa shared some amazing images to include ‘Casper’ one of the rarely seen white lions. He and one brother were the only two remaining members of the shishangane coalition at that time. It’s believed they have both passed away by now.

Elisa, who is from South Africa, had been to Kruger several times and knew where to find the variety of animals and birds who habitat the Park. She also explained the problem with poachers who endanger many species, and especially rhinos. As a consequence of rhinos being killed for their horns, they often leave behind baby rhinos who will die in the wild if not cared for. This led Elisa to cofound a charity in 2016 called ‘Blankets for Baby Rhinos’ and although this was initially to provide blankets, it has now blossomed into a volunteer-based UK charity that supports antipoaching operations within the Kruger park as well as helping support the largest rhino sanctuary in South Africa.

Elisa’s presentation was just one of many we will have over the season together with photo competitions and project themes to experience. We meet weekly on a Wednesday evening in Walford Village Hall, so if you would like to join us just use the link to our web site for further details.
